Dear Members and Visitors,
We are having a great response to What's Hot!   Due to the high volume of messages we receive, we only are able to post comments about the book of the month.

Thanks for your participation!

Molly and Monica

Hi Girls!

We are happy to say that we have had a great response to this page on our All Things Girl website.  We love to hear from all of you!  However due to the volume of reponses we have gotten, we are not able to keep up with all the input.  Therefore we will be changing the format for What's Hot.  Each month we will post a book or movie that we have read and reviewed.  All the comments will be on this book or movie only.  Read or watch the book or movie we feature and send in your comments, like you did with the Narnia series.  We will not be able to give specific reviews on TV shows, movies or books other than what we post for the month.  We hope you can all find The Daughters of the Sea, Hannah to read for October at your library or bookstore.  We look forward to your comments after you read it.  You may not want to read comments about the books or movies until after you have read or seen it yourself so that it won't be spoiled for you.  Thank you girls for your interaction and participation.  God bless!

Molly and Monica

Girls, these are the questions for you to use when analyzing books and movies:
  • Do the main characters act with virtue and integrity?
  • Are good and evil clearly delineated or confused?
  • Are parents portrayed as strong leaders for the family?
  • Is there a lesson to be learned from the book or movie?
  • Is the book or movie considered to be wholesome entertainment for middle school aged girls?
  • Do the romances show the characters developing a friendship and not a purely “passionate” relationship?
  • Does the movie or book keep the attention of the reader or viewer?
  • Does the book or movie appeal to average, modern girls?

Daughters of the Sea, Hannah, is a mystery and a fantasy story all in one. Hannah is an orphan girl who has grown up in an orphanage on the coast.  She doesn’t remember anything of life before coming there as an infant and has no records of who her parents are.   She only knows that she loves the sea and that she is somehow different that other girls her age.  The reader finds herself wondering who Hannah is.  What makes her different?

Hannah works for a wealthy family as a servant girl.  One person seems to realize that she is different and he’s a guest at the house where she works.  He seems very interested in her, even though she is such a lowly servant.  Hannah notices that his gaze follows her. She’s not the only one who notices his interest.   One of the daughters of the household also sees that this handsome guest is intrigued with Hannah.  This same daughter has everyone, including family and staff at the house on pins and needles.  She and her terribly large, mean cat terrorize everyone and Hannah is charged with caring for her needs.  Why do they seem to hate Hannah?  The reader will find herself on pins and needles wondering what they will do next to Hannah and what does this handsome guest know that Hannah doesn’t?  See if you can guess the answer to this and other intriguing questions as you read this book.

This easy to read book is entertaining and keeps the reader engaged trying to solve the mystery of what makes Hannah different.  With a hint of romance, girls will enjoy this story.   The character of the mean daughter and her cat gives a feeling of evil which adds to the intensity of the mystery.   We can recommend this book as wholesome entertainment for girls.

Hey Girls!

We hope you are enjoying reading this month's book selection.  Remember, before you read anything, you need to check with your mom to be sure she approves.  She may want to read the book before you do or join you in reading it.  It can be really fun discussing books together.  Also, the only books we recommend are the ones that are featured for that particular month.  Some of the books are part of a series or the author has written several books.  Unfortunately, we have found that some books written in a series or by the same author we can not recommend.  If you would like to read further books by the same author, your mom or dad will have to check it out.  Please remember when reading books or watching movies to use the questions listed on this page to help you analyze them so that you can practice your critical thinking skills!  These are skills you will need your entire life.  Happy Reading!

Claire

Dear Claire,

You can go online and see if you can order a used copy or see if you library can do a transfer from a larger library.  I hope this helps.

I read a review about this book saying it was boring or didn't keep the interest long enough for someone to read it. Is that true? Just asking!

Gracie

Hi Gracie,

We thought the book was entertaining, though not too sophisticated.   Check it out for yourself and then tell us what you think.  It's not a very long book so it won't take too much time to read.

Hi! This is my first time on All Things Girl. My best friend told me about it, and so far it's pretty cool! I had one question about this book. Has this author written any others? Thanks so much!

Rachael

Hi Rachael,

Welcome to ATG and we hope you keep coming back!  To answer your question, this author does have other books, however, I read a few of them that I would not recommend to girls because they have some inappropriate things in them.  If you are interested in reading anymore from this author you need to have your mom read them first.

My mom thinks Daughters of the Sea: Hannah might be too old for me. I'm twelve. Is it too old?

Gracie

Hi Gracie,

I think it would be fine for you to read, but I don't know you, and your mom does.  Ask your mom to read it first to see what she thinks.  Even if she is busy as most moms are, it is a pretty easy read and not very long so she may be able to fit it into her busy day.

Hi Molly and Monica,

I just had a question about Hannah;
Is it the only Daughters of the Sea book or are there more??  I could not find that one in my Local Library!
God Bless,
Cassie-Jane

Hi Cassie-Jane,

We have only reviewed "Hannah" from this author, so we're afraid we can not recommend other books we have not read even if it's by the same author.   Daughters  of the Sea, Hannah may not be at your library but sometimes if you ask your librarian, they may be able to bring it from a different library to your local library . Good Luck!

Hi! I have not read the book yet, but is it new? Do you think I could get it from my library? Also, is 12 a good age for someone reading it?

Mariah

Hi Mariah,
It's a contemporary book and I got it from the library to read.  I think 12 is a good age to read it.

Chronicles of Narnia and Catholic similarities

One of the similerities of the Narnia books and Catholic faith is when Aslan dies on the Stone Table in place of Edmund and comes back to life agan is just like when Jesus dies for us on the Cross and comes back to life.

Hi Molly and Monica !
Chronicles of Narnia: One of the strongest similiarities I notice is in The Last Battle-When Aslan shuts the door it reminds me of when the Earth will end here on earth.

Cassie-Jane

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So about the Narnia/Catholicism similarities...the most obvious ones are that Aslan is Jesus, the White Witch symbolizes Satan, as does the evil green lady in The Silver Chair, and the Emperor-beyond-the-sea is God. :D I haven't really studied any of the books except The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, so I'll mostly pull from there. Lucy is supposed to stand for the child in each of us, Susan, our doubts, Edmund, our sinful side, and Peter, our nobility as Children of the King. The Beavers are probably "prophets", the Israelite people the other talking creatures, and Tumnus could possibly be a disciple. There are so many more, but I think I'll leave them for other people to find. :D I seem to find a new allegory every time I read the books, so now I have to reread them and find more!

Gwen

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the Chronicles of Narnia, my grandma mentioned how she saw Aslan in the books as God the Father, and the White Witch and other evils as devils.

Gracie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Girls,
It's great to hear that you all like the Chronicles of Narnia and that some of you can see the Catholic themes.  Why don't you post send me of the similiarities you see and we'll post them on the What's Hot What's Not page for the other girls.  Let's see how many we can come up with, okay?

Molly and Monica

My favorite (Chronicles of Narnia) is the voyage of the Dawn Treader too! I can't wait to see the movie! And also, once I did a 4 minute speech on the similarities between the books and Catholicism. Next time you read them, try to find all the things!
